REC/REW dev update #13

Here we go again!

I'm a bit late with respect to the deadline I had set for myself, but... yeah I simply collapsed on the bed yesterday, and when I woke up again a couple hours ago I found out it was May 31st already ^_^;...

So... REC/REW version 0.2.3, dedicated to Romolo station on Milan's M2 subway line. Script-wise this update adds some 25-30k words: just for reference, be aware that the base script (ie. without sprites, backgrounds, scenes etc.) for the second chapter of this project  is nearly 18k lines (lines, not words); REC/REW 0.2.3 includes nearly 6k lines  from it so we're around 30% completion for that chapter only. Since it took me a couple months to get here, it follows that chapter 2 will be finalized somewhere around Fall 2023. Which is neither bad nor far from what I originally had in mind.

This update also introduces an attempt at visually separate the main character's stream of consciousness from whatever happens in the rest of the world. While it's not exactly what I had in mind, I'd say is a nice trade-off between that original idea and readability. Do let me know your opinion btw!

...

And now for the not-so-good part: only the downloadable version of the game has been updated. The web version would now require me to massively merge graphic assets in order to keep the project under the 1000 files limit set by itch.io for web based games. A quick look at my game's stats makes me think a request to lift that requirement for my project is not exactly going to be a top priority for itch.io so  I've decided to postpone the entire matter to a time when the full chapter #2 is released. It does make sense (somewhat) since that will also mark the end of the development for the web version (I mentioned that somewhere...): by then every asset I'll have to work on will be there, that means I'll have a clear picture of the situation.
